AIMM Publishes New Blog Post: How To Find Your Vocal Range

Duluth, Georgia –

Duluth, GA based music school Atlanta Institute of Music and Media (AIMM) recently published a blog post, titled ‘How to Find Your Vocal Range.’ The Institute has established itself as one of the country’s leading providers of musical education, offering majors in a variety of music and media subjects, including but not limited to Music Technology, Music Performance and Recording Arts Technician, and they often share a wealth of information on the industry and more through their blog.

Atlanta Institute of Music and Media President Nite Driscoll states, “If you are aiming to be a singer, finding your vocal range is one of the most critical things you need to do. Learning your vocal range will also teach you more about your voice type, understand your weak spots, measure your progress in voice training and choose the right songs for your voice. As you grow and learn, if you want to expand your vocal range, knowing your current range serves as a starting point. This means that a knowledge of their vocal range is vital to any singer.”

how-to-find-your-vocal-range

As AIMM explains, a vocal range is the scope of notes (from the lowest note to the highest note) that an individual can comfortably sing in their chest voice. The notes in one’s vocal range have to be fully projected and not sung in falsetto or their head voice. There are different vocal ranges, and they are also described as vocal types: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass.

The center of a vocal range is the tessitura. This is the set of notes that a singer can reliably project following a vocal warm-up, and they should be able to confidently belt this set. While vocalists may feel comfortable singing notably low or high notes within their range, if they cannot belt them out at maximum volume, it means that they are not within their tessitura or typical range.

According to Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, the best reason for anyone to know their vocal range is so they can pick the type of songs that fit their voice. For instance, people with a lower range can easily emulate Johnny Cash. Those with a higher range might relate to Beyonce or Freddie Mercury. Anyone in the middle might be able to perform Billie Eilish’s songs. Being able to choose the right song to sing will do wonders for an aspiring singer’s career.

To find a vocal range, AIMM says anyone concerned should begin by identifying the lowest note they can sing. The blog post explains further, saying “Find middle C (C4) on the piano and sing a consistent vowel sound like ‘ah,’ ‘ee’ or ‘oo,’ matching your voice to the C4 note. Now, go down all white keys and sing to each note until you reach the lowest recognizable pitch you can sustain. The last note you can sing comfortably without croaking or breathing is your low note.” The same process done in reverse will help establish the singer’s highest note, and their vocal range is what is between their lowest note and their highest note. More information can be found on AIMM’s blog.

For those who are passionate about singing and want to pursue a career in the industry, knowing their vocal range is just the start. If they want to be on the fast track to becoming a professional and well-compensated singer, they should think about attending an accredited music college — such as Atlanta Institute of Music and Media.

AIMM has two programs with a vocal concentration that will help aspiring singers expand their range, perfect their pitch and completely master their singing abilities. Atlanta Institute of Music and Media also offers additional degrees, such as the Music and Technology Associate Degree: Vocal Concentration, which can give singers an additional skill boost by teaching them how to track, mix and master music.

Those who want to learn more about Atlanta Institute of Music and Media and the variety of programs on offer can find more information on their website. The Institute encourages interested parties to get in touch with Nite Driscoll or another member of the team directly via email or phone. Further, Atlanta Institute of Music and Media can also be reached through the contact form on their website. They also have a Facebook page where they post updates and share additional information and communicate with the community.

Atlanta Institute of Music and Media Publishes Blog Post Offering Vocal Audition Tips

Duluth, Georgia –

Atlanta Institute of Music and Media (AIMM), an accredited music college from Atlanta that offers various music degrees and certificates, has released a guide that novice singers who are preparing for a singing audition can learn from.

A spokesperson for AIMM talks about the article offering the best vocal audition tips for singers by saying, “We are always publishing new and interesting content to help those who want to enter the music industry. Regardless of the path you want to take to make it big, the learning never stops. Whether you want to be a producer, instrumentalist, or singer, there is always a new challenge to overcome and a new milestone to accomplish. With this latest blog post, we are focusing on vocalists who want to prepare for a vocal audition. This could be a local or national singing competition, musical audition, or even auditioning for a music school like AIMM. The new blog provides tips for music auditions, the mindset to attack the audition with, and even suggestions for recorded virtual auditions. We urge you to go through the article yourself. It will give you a leg up if you are currently in the process of auditioning. If you are still in the early stages of your musical journey, consider learning more about AIMM and how we can help your dreams come true.”

singing-audition-tips

The blog post begins by acknowledging that auditioning can be a stressful experience as a lot is riding on it. It is natural to get nervous and, consequently, to deliver a performance that doesn’t fully match one’s capabilities. To ease this harrowing experience, the article recommends a few techniques to strengthen one’s mindset.

The article says that singers should choose a song that they are comfortable with and well-versed in. It doesn’t necessarily have to be easy or trivial to sing but the singer should be familiar with its intricacies to be able to nail every note. Singers should also take care of their voice which is their primary “instrument” by doing proper vocal warm-ups, singing from the diaphragm, resting the voice, performing breathing exercises, and staying hydrated before the audition.

It is also important to know what kind of gig or talent show one is auditioning for. It helps to ask oneself questions about the event such as what talents and vibe the audition organizers are looking for, what is the next step after the audition, how many songs need to be prepared, do they emphasize the musical skills, vocal, singing skills, styles, or the characteristics and the appearance of the singer, and more.

Once all details about the auditions are ascertained, it is time for the positive pep talk to motivate oneself to put the best foot forward when standing on the audition stage. The music industry is very competitive, and self-belief is an important quality to survive the challenges it can pose. The audition is destined to be a stepping-stone and believing in oneself is just the first hurdle to clear to have a long career in the music industry.

The article then asks the performers to maintain a compelling stage presence that can make the audience root for them. The more engaging the performance, the more likely the judges will pick the candidate. It is also recommended to dress according to the aesthetic expected by the event. After the performance is over, regardless of the result, the singers should always thank the judges for the opportunity professionally and courteously. Finally, the blog post also offers some tips for virtual auditions such as ensuring proper audio quality, correct framing within the audition video, appropriate lighting, and a pleasing backdrop.

Recently, the Atlanta music school launched another blog post titled AIMM’s Ultimate Guide to Singing that gives tips for aspiring singers to improve their vocal chops. Readers who want to talk to a representative from the music school for more information about its many courses can contact AIMM at (770) 242-7717 or admissions@aimm.edu.

“articleBody”: “The Best Audition Tips for Singers How to Prepare for a Singing Audition A vocal audition can be a nerve-racking experience, even for famous singers who have already auditioned countless times. Due to this stress, it is easy for some best practices to slip through the cracks. That is why we are here to give you the best tips and mindset to tackle your vocal audition and ensure that it is a success. Being properly prepared can make a world of difference in how smoothly things go on audition day. So, let’s get into it. Table of Contents: Sing Something that Compliments Your Voice Maintain a Healthy Singing Voice Know the Auditions Requirements Believe in Yourself Engage Your Audience Dress Appropriately Thank the Judges for Their Time Bonus: 4 Virtual Audition Tips Sing Something that Compliments Your Voice When you audition, you need to sing a song that you know and are comfortable with. Auditions are not the time to sing an experimental piece or try a new song. Instead, choose an audition song you’re well-versed in singing. Also, make sure it’s well within your range. Now, that doesn’t mean you should pick an easy song. You still want to highlight your talents and vocal qualities to wow the judges. Just don’t set yourself up for potential failure. Maintain a Healthy Singing Voice As a vocalist, your voice is your instrument. Musicians take care of their instruments by keeping them in cases and undergoing routine maintenance. You need to apply the same principles to your vocal cords. Remember to take care of your instrument, or it won’t work properly. You should even consider what foods and drinks to consume before singing. Some things you can do to take care of your voice are doing proper warm-ups, singing from your diaphragm, resting your voice, performing breathing exercises, and staying hydrated. Know the Audition’s Requirements Before you worry about anything else, you have to know detailed information about the audition. What talents and vibe are the audition organizers looking for? What is the next step after the audition? Should you have two songs prepared or one? These are questions you should be able to answer. It’s critical that you understand the objectives of the audition and what purpose it serves in the greater scheme. Do they emphasize the musical skills, vocal, singing skills, styles, or the characteristics and the appearance of the singer? If you’re not sure, it won’t hurt to reach out. Asking ahead of time does not make you look bad. Rather, it gives you more time to accurately prepare for the audition. Believe in Yourself It’s kind of cliché, but if you don’t believe in yourself, who will? You have to believe in yourself and your vocal skills. This self-confidence should be constant and acquired through intensive practice and preparation. The music industry will eat you up if you don’t believe in yourself. Doing your best will provide you with the confidence that you need. This is the \”it\” factor. Move on the stage like you own it. Captivating body language and appropriate facial expressions mean a lot to your success. Engage Your Audience When you get to your audition space, be your natural self. Let your personality come out. Don’t try to be someone you aren’t, but you don’t want to appear robotic and boring. Before you start singing, you want to capture and keep the judge’s attention in a friendly and respectful way. Once you are ready to audition, the judges have probably already seen countless performers, so you need to do something to wake them up. The easiest thing to do is smile and make eye contact with each judge. Utilize your space and let yourself feel the music. The best type of singing is passionate singing. If you care about what you’re singing and want to convey that to the judge, passion is the way to go. A simple way to do this is to think about the lyrics and what emotion the songwriter intended to elicit. Just be careful not to overdo it or get cocky. Always stay professional and respectful the entire time while having fun. Dress Appropriately Always be sure your attire is in synergy with your song and audition. Don’t wear hard rock attire if you’re singing a ballad. Sometimes flashy colors may be disadvantageous to you, depending on your performance. Other times they are just what you need. Basically, what we are saying is to use discretion and fully understand the audition requirements, as we mentioned above. More often than not, you want the judges to remember your performance, not your clothes. After all, it is a singing audition, not a fashion show. Base your attire on what you’re auditioning for, and if you aren’t sure what to wear, soft colors are best. If there’s an established and preferred dress code, follow it. Don’t try to stand out by breaking the rules. Thank the Judges for Their Time Part of leaving a good impression on the judges is thanking them for their time. Be sure you’re remembered as someone who is friendly, appreciates the opportunity, and is easy to work with. Kindness and gratitude will get you far and help you stick out in a crowd. And if you’re lucky enough to get constructive criticism on the spot, make sure to put your ego to the side and consider their suggestions. Bonus: 4 Virtual Audition Tips We live in a day and age where if something can shift to a virtual space, it likely will. Vocal auditions are certainly no exception. If you’re interested in a vocal competition or a music school and need to submit a vocal recording as your audition, follow the tips below. Audio Quality You don’t need your recording to be in a professionally sound-treated room, but try to eliminate outside noise and distractions as much as possible. The last thing you want to do is submit a video where you can hear a fire truck siren or a loud dog barking in the background. Make Sure You’re Framed Well Your vocal techniques won’t matter much if you’re head is out of the frame. If the camera is too close or far away, your performance will feel cramped or distant. Set up your camera so that everyone watching can see your face. If you are also playing an instrument, make sure it’s also in the shot. Do a few quick trials and take a look at the framing before you commit to recording a full performance with your current setup. It’s better to spend a little time upfront perfecting your shot than nailing a great audition only to realize that the top of your head was out of frame the entire time. Consider Your Lighting When filming your audition, the first thing you need to think about is your lighting. The judges and the audience need to see you clearly. If you can, take advantage of any natural light you have. If you don’t have any natural light, LED ring lights are available at most big box stores now. These lights are cheap, and if you’re going to be regularly recording your performances and uploading them online, they add a professional quality to your videos. Use a Good Backdrop Your choice of backdrop is entirely up to you but think of it as a way to market yourself as a performer and express your personality. Some singers put music-related objects behind them or a string of lights on the wall to make it seem like an event. You can also decorate according to the event, school, competition, or musical you are auditioning for. Look into the audition songs and see if you get any ideas from the lyrics. Little things like that can really help you stand out. Try to avoid a messy background or recording in a random room like your bathroom. Start Your Career at an Accredited Music College When it comes to a successful audition, all of the above are important. Remember, practice makes perfect. So if you have a few bad auditions don’t let them discourage you. It’s just preparation for future auditions. Are you looking to get a competitive edge? Do you want to learn the best singing techniques? Or receive hands-on vocal education from industry-leading instructors? If so, you need to check out Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. Atlanta Institute of Music and Media Is Explaining How Easy It Is To Start Music Production At Home

Duluth, Georgia –

Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, an accredited music college from Atlanta that has trained some of the most prominent names in modern music, is urging those with ambitions of starting a music production studio to find out exactly how they can get started from home. More information can be found in the blog post: https://www.aimm.edu/blog/start-music-production-company-at-home.

The music industry recorded a staggering $8 billion in revenue in 2021, a significant increase compared to its numbers over the last decade. Since streaming services have become mainstream and due to the introduction of countless online platforms to promote one’s music that increases the chances of one going viral, even creators with humble origins can make it big. Case in point, one of the music industry’s biggest breakout stars of the last couple of years, Billie Eilish recorded her songs and uploaded them to the music sharing website Soundcloud where they gained traction and eventually netted her a record deal. These stories are not uncommon and with the barriers to entry, such as hardware and software, being lower than ever, there has never been a better time to chart a career in music.

According to AIMM’s blog post on the topic, those who want to produce music from the comfort of their home should consider soundproofing the room of the home where they intend to work and giving it the acoustic treatment. Soundproofing reduces sound leakage from inside the home studio to the outside world. Acoustic treatment involves the control of reverberation and echoes inside the studio to enable the musician to capture the best sound. Once the home studio is built, they will need equipment such as a desktop computer or laptop, a copy of audio software or a digital audio workstation (DAW) such as AVID Pro Tools, Ableton Live, or FL Studio, a soundboard, an audio interface, a USB microphone, XLR mic cable, mic stand, a pop filter, and headphones or a pair of studio monitors.

Once the equipment and space are ready, it is time to upgrade one’s skills. AIMM recommends learning the basics such as creating a MIDI with a piano roll, creating an audio track enabled to record, and setting the input source to the webcam if recording, in the software or DAW of choice. A music school such as AIMM will cover all these basics and many more advanced topics that will put a student’s skills at par with the professionals working in the industry.

The next step is getting a formal business set up by starting a company, preferably an LLC. This can involve filing paperwork and taxes, depending on the state one is in. The company should be the artist’s brand which should then be marketed on as many online social media platforms as possible. They should upload their creations to popular streaming and music hosting services to reach the widest audience. The artist should also make contacts with industry professionals and tastemakers such as those who control streaming playlists and curate the music for local and college radio stations. Other marketing tools include business cards and a website. Finally, all these marketing efforts should be used to collaborate with local artists. This not only helps one broaden their music horizons but also lets them tap into the fan bases of established artists.

A spokesperson for AIMM talks about what the music college can do for those wondering how to become a music producer by saying, “The dream of being a music producer is accessible, now more than ever before. If you work hard consistently, you can make a stable living and you even have a chance of reaching the pinnacle of success. If you need a boost to your skills, AIMM offers extensive lessons, courses, and programs for music producers. AIMM offers multiple programs for producers, including the Certificate in Music Production which is offered both online and on-site on campus, and the Music Production and Audio for Media Associate Degree.”

“articleBody”: “How Can I Start a Music Production Company at Home? Have you always wanted to be a music producer and start your own music production company? If so, you’re in luck because it’s arguably easier than ever to get started in the comfort of your own home. It’s pretty incredible what kind of technology and software is accessible to producers. Many people wanting to break into the music industry think that they need the most expensive equipment or the fanciest studio to produce music. While amazing equipment and a premium studio might be nice, it isn’t necessary to start out in music production. But, what equipment do you need? And how should you go about setting up your home studio? In the article below, we will discuss how you can start a music production company at home. Table Of Contents Learn About the Business and Build Skills Set Up Your Home Recording Studio How to Make Music with a DAW Software Name Your Company Develop Your Brand Seek Out Local Talent Learn About the Business and Build Skills So far, we’ve only really mentioned equipment and how accessible it is. But, it’s important to remember that producing music is not a skill-less endeavor. If you want clients, you need to know what you’re doing. And not only that, but be great at it, too. An education from a music school will help tremendously when trying to break into the industry. If you want to learn the best techniques that your favorite producers use there truly is no substitute for attending an accredited music college. However, you can get started before you attend school by building some skills on your own. Learn as much as you can about the business by reading articles and subscribing to relevant newsletters and insider websites. Once you have built a foundation of knowledge on your own, getting a degree in music production, sound engineering, or recording will help you advance your overall learning and career. Set Up Your Home Recording Studio Even the big-name producers have a studio at home. Find a nice secluded spot in your house that will give you the best chance of working in silence. It’s important to be free from distractions and interruptions of the outside world while you are working. It’s a good idea to soundproof the room with paneling that you can make yourself, or if you do have the funds, you can hire a professional to do it for you. You can also buy foam pads in bulk on sites like Amazon. This will remove outside distractions and your neighbors will likely thank you. Sound treating a room is important, too, to get the best sound possible. Wait, aren’t soundproofing and sound treatment the same? They are not. Soundproofing is when you reduce sound leakage from inside your home studio to the outside world and other areas of your home. Acoustic treatment involves reverberation and echo control inside your studio so that you can capture the best sound. Once you’ve picked out your room, it’s time to fill it with the right equipment. When you’re on a tight budget, getting the recording equipment can be challenging. If we’re talking just the basic equipment needed to start recording, here’s what you’ll need: A desktop computer or laptop Audio software or a digital audio workstation (DAW) AVID Pro Tools Ableton Live FL Studios A soundboard An audio interface A USB microphone, XLR mic cable, mic stand, and a pop filter Headphones or a pair of studio monitors And that’s about all the gear you will need to start. Most beginner producers will use the laptop or desktop they already have. This equipment can cost under $500 -$750, assuming you already own a computer. If you want to record with an instrument, be sure to assemble the appropriate gear and equipment needed to record yourself or another musician playing. How to Make Music with a DAW Software The most important part of owning a production company is actually producing the music. Makes sense, right? That is where DAW software comes into play. There are free programs available, but if you’re willing to pay for one, it will definitely open up your options. Pro Tools is a great program, and there are free, but limited, versions available for download. They will be good enough to get started for sure. Learning the free versions of these programs will allow you to know them and be familiar with them when it is time to upgrade. As a beginner, you will need to figure out how to: Create a MIDI with a piano roll Create an audio track enabled to record Set the input source to your webcam if recording You can learn this on your own, but as we mentioned earlier, attending a music school that offers Pro Tools Certification can go a long way. Name Your Company Before you start networking or trying to get your brand out there, you should give your company a name. If you have plans of building your music production company to include staff, you’ll need a unique business name. However, using your name is an option you can roll with, even if you plan to establish a business for your music production. If you create a business and choose a name for your company, you will need to file a DBA (doing business as) form. You might also want to look into creating an L.L.C (limited liability company). Your state may require you to file additional paperwork and tax forms. If you’re just playing around with the idea of starting a music production company, you might want to wait just a bit on this, because starting an LLC is a major financial and time commitment. However, if you are serious about your company and want to appear as professional as possible, it is the way to go. Develop Your Brand If you’re serious about your business, you will need to market yourself. Musicians aren’t going to just stumble upon you. You’ll need to really put yourself out there, both locally and digitally. Once you are established and producing music, reach out to local and college radio stations. Create social media accounts and showcase your work. Make sure to create a business Instagram, a Facebook Page, and maybe even a Facebook Group to help build your own community. Did you know: you can invite people that liked your Facebook Page to join your group? This can be beneficial since the average Facebook user will search for Pages rather than Groups, but…your organic reach when it comes to posting will reach way more people in a Group. For local, in-person meetings make sure you have business cards on hand. Create business cards that are memorable, but don’t make the graphics or colors so distracting that people can’t find the information that is pertinent. Having a website is also a great idea. We live in a virtual world, so securing a space where musicians can find you and learn about your music production abilities is important. This is also a great place for you to showcase your talent and past projects. Seek Out Local Talent Another way to market yourself is to work with local talent who can help spread the word about your music production business. And, at some point, it will be time to start producing songs. Being active in the local music scene and establishing contacts with local artists is crucial. You can also branch out of your hometown and record with regional recording artists. No matter what type of music you are into, there are local artists who will have similar tastes and styles you can link with. If you don’t have a production contract, there are plenty of templates online. Want Music Production to be Your Full-Time Career? Starting a music production company at home will take hard work, but if you are passionate about your craft and put the time and energy into it, you can certainly get it done. The advice above will get you started, but you will have to stick with it. Continue looking for new learning opportunities and ways to promote your music production skills. What if there was a way you could master your music production techniques, collaborate with talented musicians, and network within the industry? There is: attending the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. AIMM is an accredited music college that offers multiple programs for producers, including: Music Production and Audio for Media Associate Degree Certificate in Music Production You can truly put your home studio to the test in the Spring of 2022 when AIMM officially launches the Certificate in Music Production online! AIMM: Why Music Producers Should Learn An Instrument

Duluth, Georgia –

The Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, based in Duluth, GA, is encouraging music producers to learn an instrument as part of their education. Much like building a certain muscle makes the body work more fluidly as a whole, the Institute says that experience playing an instrument can enhance their capabilities in music production.

To illustrate their point, the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media recently published a new blog post that delves further into the subject. Titled ‘Why Music Producers Should Learn an Instrument,’ the post says, “Many successful producers still have a background in instrumentation. Even if you’re not a master of the instrument, having experience playing an instrument is critical. It helps you understand and relate to the musician you’re working with and ultimately elevates your craft. Consider this, too — the music industry is incredibly competitive, so any advantage you can get over the competition will help set you apart.”

In essence, playing an instrument opens up the artist’s perception of numerous aspects of music, including music theory and other notable concepts that they might miss if they attempted to stick solely to production. A good producer can mix hundreds of sounds (or more) to create a song they like. With a background in instrumentation, their instincts will naturally have a much deeper pool of understanding to pull from, and this will be quite evident in their output.

If an individual had to pick an instrument for the express purpose of improving their talents as a music producer, AIMM says they recommend the piano or a keyboard. “A producer with little or no understanding of music theory can try their best, but a person with a strong music theory background and knowledge has a massive advantage. Essentially, they have a built-in blueprint on how to start creating music and how each additional piece can be integrated. It’s all about expanding your ‘tool kit,’ so to speak.” Learning piano includes much of this, from keys, chords and scales to tones, pitches, sheet music and more. Electronic music producers in particular stand to gain a great deal by learning the keyboard.

Alternatively, the Institute also recommends that students consider learning what is known as a ‘single voice instrument,’ such as violins, cellos and other string instruments. Since overlapping rhythms cannot be played in the same way they can on a piano, this produces a restriction that musicians have to be creative to get around. AIMM acknowledges that songs contain numerous instruments, samples and other elements that contribute to the final product, but this is not the only aspect of music that a student should know. By learning a single voice instrument, they will learn to explore music in a more intimate degree than simply aiming for a final product.

Any student who looks into the matter today will soon learn that there is no need to learn an instrument to be a music producer. Success is not determined by a knowledge of instruments alone, so they may want to eschew this part of their education in order to get started earlier. However, AIMM deeply advises them to learn an instrument because it will offer them a great deal of opportunities as well as potential for growth as time goes on and their career progresses.

Fortunately, they will not have to take this journey alone. The Atlanta Institute of Music and Media offers a comprehensive Music and Technology Associate Degree that combines music production techniques and education with in-depth training in one a selection of instruments. Students may choose between learning the guitar, bass, drums, keyboard or vocals when they pursue AIMM’s music degrees, developing a strong understanding of music theory under the guiding hand of their faculty.

AIMM has produced many musical talents who have gone on to have extremely illustrious careers, and the institution is adept at preparing students for various aspects of the modern music industry. As a result, anyone who wants to implement a solid foundation for their music career could scarcely do better than if they signed up with the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media.

Further details can be found on AIMM’s website. Similarly, students and other interested parties may contact the Institute directly to follow up on any further inquiries.

However, that doesn’t mean that you should swing so far to the other side of the pendulum that you forgo learning an instrument. Even if music production is your end all be all. Many successful producers still have a background in instrumentation. Even if you’re not a master of the instrument, having experience playing an instrument is critical. It helps you understand and relate to the musician you’re working with and ultimately elevates your craft. Consider this, too – the music industry is incredibly competitive, so any advantage you can get over the competition will help set you apart. Experience in instrumentation also opens up new avenues of creativity surrounding music and gives you a working knowledge of music theory and other essential concepts. In the article below, we will discuss why music producers should have experience playing an instrument. Table of Contents: Music and Music Producers Which Instrument is Most Important to Music Production? Learn a Single Voice Instrument Can I be a Music Producer Without Learning an Instrument? Separate From the Crowd Music and Music Producers Before we dive into this further, let’s discuss music production. What exactly is music production? On the surface, music production is the capturing and manipulation of music. Even the most organic sounding music on a record has undergone music production to a certain extent. However, music production is much more than simply recording music. Completely new and unique elements and sounds can be added to a track with precision. EDM music, for example, is heavily reliant on music production. There aren’t many actual instruments in EDM and many of the songs are made entirely on computers. This style is also extremely popular in pop music. Many pop songs are written on piano or acoustic guitar and then taken to the computer. This is where music production comes in. Producers utilize a MIDI controller that allows them to surf through thousands of different sounds. So, if you’re a music producer and want to learn an instrument which one should be your priority? Which Instrument is Most Important to Music Production? One of the most essential instruments a producer could learn to enhance their production abilities is the piano or a keyboard. Pianos and keyboards are the top go-to instruments to learn music theory. Music theory knowledge is vital in music production because it helps producers understand the dynamics of music, which can give them a leg up on the competition. A musical knowledge of harmonics and melody simplifies instrument selection, instrument pairing, and vocal mixing. A producer with little or no understanding of music theory can try their best, but a person with a strong music theory background and knowledge has a massive advantage. Essentially, they have a built-in blueprint on how to start creating music and how each additional piece can be integrated. It’s all about expanding your \”tool kit,\” so to speak. Practice sessions on a piano can be a great way to learn about keys, chords, scales, tones, pitches, sheet music, and many other helpful facets of music theory. Learning the keyboard can significantly aid your career as an electronic music producer and be the gateway to learning how to play other instruments. Learn a Single Voice Instrument Understanding music theory and producing ideas with the keyboard can be invaluable to a producer. But stopping there doesn’t give you the most profound knowledge an instrument can provide. That knowledge is the human aspects of music, like motion and listening. Understanding these aspects usually requires learning a single voice instrument. What do we mean by a \”single voice instrument?\” Single voice instruments only produce one voice at a time, like winds and strings. Trumpets, trombones, violins, and cellos are examples of single-voice instruments. You cannot play overlapping rhythms with single voice instruments like you can on a piano. They can only produce one idea at a time. This forces you to be creative and teaches you different lessons about music. With fewer options, you’ll have to come up with inventive ways to create. Playing one rhythm at a time might seem unnecessary for many producers because electronic music tracks have a lot of overlapping layers. Songs consist of several instruments, samples, drum patterns, effects, and other elements. Still, learning a single voice instrument will improve your music production skills by forcing you to focus on different aspects of music other than forming the final product. Can I be a Music Producer Without Learning an Instrument? It is still possible to be a successful producer without learning an instrument. Music production is digital now, so knowledge of an instrument isn’t required for you to be considered a producer. Digital Audio Workstations like Pro Tools have everything you need to help you become a music producer. However, just because you can be a music producer without learning an instrument doesn’t mean you should limit yourself. In terms of opportunity and growth potential as a producer, having a solid understanding of instrumentation goes a long way. This knowledge will ultimately change and improve the way you approach record creation. Producers use music theory whether they realize it or not, so mastering theory, even if you don’t learn an instrument, will add to your skill set and workflow inside your DAW. Separate From the Crowd Learning how to play an instrument and understanding music theory teaches you lessons about music beyond what you program or master in a DAW. Want to fast-track your success and ability to pair instrumentation with your music production talents? Check out Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. What Advantage Does a Music College Provide? At AIMM, you’ll have the opportunity to master your skills, make life-long industry connections, and network with other musicians and producers like yourself.

What Are the Benefits of Getting AVID Pro Tools Certified?

Benefits of Earning Your Pro Tools Certification

Like any other skilled trade, musicians should utilize the tools and specialized equipment needed to make their work easier and better.

If you want to compose, record, mix, or edit music, you need a reliable Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to accomplish these tasks.

A good DAW will allow you to accomplish digital audio editing more easily, intuitively, and expertly. But a DAW like Pro Tools is an advanced tool for experts, so it’s essential to know how to use it properly.

You don’t want to invest your money into a program without the operational skills to get your money’s worth out of it.

That’s where a Pro Tools certification comes in handy.

In the article below, we will go over the benefits of getting Pro Tools certified.
